Miko breathes in deep, the cold air filling her lungs with something sharp and awake. “Good morning,” Miko mutters to the waving branches of spindly trees resting just below the veranda of her balcony, and pretends that the whisper of leaves in the wind is an answer back.
“Good morning, Sakura.”
Miko’s thoughts grind to a halt. Her head turns, painfully slowly, to the balcony of the apartment next to hers. She swears she hears the bones in her neck creak and groan like a rusty metal swivel.
