It started as too many things did. With Lambert opening his fat trap and ruining a good thing. Or, rather, Geralt needing to think on and confront his emotions and not wanting to touch them with a ten-foot pole. If only that hadn't translated to Jaskier mishandling a cursed hourglass and regressing into a child.

Geralt didn't know why he followed Jaskier around to different festivals, but at least listening to Jaskier play music made the bard happy and killed time before he needed to go monster hunting. He just... wasn't expecting the monster hunting to come to him.

Summary
One would think after twenty years of pining and loving a man, if that love would be the cause of Jaskier’s demise, said demise would’ve been done with long ago. It was, naturally, once things had calmed that said demise arrived on his doorstep. The first time it happened, Jaskier had hardly noticed. When Geralt’s strong hands lingered on his arm, preventing him from tripping, Jaskier felt a lump in his throat. His heart fluttered. (Its usual traitorous response to Geralt’s attention.) His throat tightened. He coughed, feeling himself hack something up into his mouth, but swallowed it back down assuming it to be some kind of phlegm.
How wrong he was, swallowing back that first petal, choking however briefly on his affections.

Actually, all of them were. Little shit bastards. Feral goblins. Hellspawn. If it wasn’t Sakura literally changing the landscape of the field underneath Kakashi’s feet, it was Sasuke swinging a sword crackling with lightning, both of them subtly herding him towards Naruto’s hundred shadow-clones, all of which were so fast he could barely track them even with the sharingan.
Kakashi was starting to think his team definitely didn’t have the same problems as the others.
