The pearls resting against Ruan Mei’s collarbone had suddenly become unbearably distracting.
Herta wanted to reach over and move them back where they belonged. She wanted to know the temperature of Ruan Mei’s wrist, to press two fingers to her pulse and see whether it was really as calm as she looked.
Then Ruan Mei pushed the glass out of her reach.

Herta needs Ruan Mei for a research project.
Thirteen unanswered emails and a month and a half of radio silence later, Herta does the most reasonable thing she can think of: reconstructs Ruan Mei’s routine, catches her outside the university pool, and asks her in person.
Herta already knows exactly why she chose Ruan Mei as her collaborator.
The trouble begins when that answer stops being the only one. -
