Vergil teaches Dante a lesson. Or, rather, Dante gets exactly what he wants.

“I could smell its scent on you, brother dearest. All the way here. Base and weak and unfit to have ever touched you.” Another feather-light brush of their lips, and Vergil whispers into Dante’s mouth like a secret, “If it weren’t already dead, I’d rip it to pieces myself.”

Thing is, Dante never claimed to be a good person. And even if he did, that was so long ago it doesn't count any more.

Wandering the endless expanses of hell with one person and no other form of entertainment, sometimes you need to spend some time apart so that you don't go back to trying to kill one another again. The last thing Vergil said before they walked in opposite directions was,

"Don't touch those plants. I'm serious, Dante. You won't like the consequences."

    Naturally, Dante touches the plants.

“So what if-“ His question is cut off abruptly by the sudden presence of three fingers in his mouth. He lets out a muffled “gck!” around them as his head is pushed back with the momentum. He stills, wide-eyed at the intrusion. Vergil doesn’t even look at him. His writing continues completely uninterrupted.

“I seem to recall expressing a need for silence. If you can’t control yourself, perhaps someone else should do it for you.” Oh, Dante is so game. But Vergil continues, “If you behave yourself and stay quiet and still, you’ll be rewarded.” Goddamn it, but that’s boring.
