“I need your help,” Harry said, his voice raspy and desperate as he stared at Tom.
“Anything,” Tom bit out as he stumbled around his desk, his left hand falling on something new with each step to keep him upright. When he was close to Harry, he reached out a shaky hand to touch the mark. Harry did not bat his hand away, and when Tom's fingers brushed the mark, his snake moved as heat sparked low in his belly. He felt warm all over. Tom fell to his knees, and Harry fell with him. “What do you need?”
Harry leaned in closer as they watched Tom’s snake move down his arm, along his finger, and onto Harry’s skin. His snake did not hesitate to wrap itself protectively around the hare, which twitched but did not run from the sudden company. Even though the mark was no longer physically on his body, he could still feel its heat as if it were. They were still connected. His mark sang with happiness, and Tom echoed it.
Harry was still trembling.

“Riddle got headboy,” Hermione complained, nearly shattering the compartment door as she slammed it shut. Her hair was frizzier than usual and her cheeks were red. “I was holding out hope that Professor Dumbledore would champion Crouch instead. Not that he would be all that much better, but still.”
Harry and Ron exchanged a glance.
“It wasn’t really that bad,” Ron said lowly to Harry as Hermione rifled through her compartment. Neville and Luna were talking louder to one another to drown out Hermione’s tyraid. “You know how Riddle is when he’s around a bunch of people. He made Hermione look barking mad, though, with how calm he was compared to her.”
Harry ducked his head to hide his smirk. He loved Hermione for everything that she was, but it didn’t mean she was any less amusing when she got riled up like this.
“He asked about you, of course,” Hermione said suddenly, looking at him crossly. “He wanted to make sure you were here because he didn’t see you get on the train and he was worried.”

Then the hair on her neck stood up and she closed her mouth.
She looked towards Harry to see him looking right through her. Harry’s smile was different now, softer and more real. In the reflection of the window, she could see Tom Riddle– tall, handsome, and incredibly regal approaching their table.
“Hi,” Harry said as Riddle dropped his bag in the chair on the other side of Harry, ignoring Amélie completely.
Riddle rested the back of his hand on Harry’s forehead as a greeting before frowning down at him. “You still feel warm.”
Harry rolled his eyes and swatted at his hand. “It’s a million degrees in this castle, is all.”
“No it’s not,” Riddle said evenly. He sounded so calm, as if he wasn’t wrestling Harry’s hand away so he could check his temperature again.
“You’re just being paranoid.”
“Then let us ask your friend, Miss Vance,” Riddle said, still without looking at her. “She’s an impartial judge. Miss Vance, do you think it’s warm in here?”

Summary
