Summary
It happens in a world where the population is divided into two groups, chosen to join each from a young age, separate but for a few exceptions. The first option: become an Inventor, join the elite, use your mind. The second “choice”: live as a Carpenter and build whatever the Inventors dream up.
Jean is a Carpenter, and while he isn’t malcontent about it, he isn’t happy either. But then a new opportunity becomes apparent: leaving his fellow Carpenters to work with the Inventors.
It’s the chance of a lifetime, a chance for a safer life beyond the factory, but Jean just might get more than he bargained for.
(And no one even wants to think about the mysterious third option. . .)
