Logically, there was a before. He understands that. There was a person he had been, before Gwi-ma. He remembers bits and pieces of him, like little wisps of smoke. Unhappy things, like frantic, screaming voices, and echoes of a nameless pain. The things Gwi-ma allowed him to remember, the shame that kept him obedient and useful in the endless agony of the Underworld.
A shell. A shadow of a boy he didn’t remember. He’d accepted that he’d never be anything else. That he’d never deserve to be anything else.
He’d never, ever, imagined there would be an after. Never let himself hold on to such a reckless, foolish hope.
But here he was, waking in the after.

This attack is not quite on his patrol route anymore, but it's close enough that Shouta feels comfortable staying here for a few minutes, watching the villains get arrested and shipped off.
He didn't hear anything about anyone being seriously injured, but there are two ambulances around anyway and Shouta makes his way over, briefly checking how severe the injuries are but it seems to be mostly scraps and bruises.
And that's fine and all, until he spots a mop of way too familiar spikey blond hair.
"Bakugo," he says as he steps closer, checking the boy over.

And suddenly, all of Hitoshi's hope shattered at his feet as Yamada gasped, his hand flying toward his face to cover his mouth. The funny part was that Hitoshi hadn't even realized he'd asked a question until his teacher reacted like that. Abruptly, the light in his eyes dimmed.
(Or, Hitoshi quits his training with Aizawa and pushes him and the Voice Hero away when misunderstandings ensue, all while struggling through every day in an abusive foster home.)
