    Ben reminded her of that man, with a desperation that made her apprehensive, though more for herself or him, she could not say. He had looked that way to her only once before.

    "You have that look in your eyes," she had told him at their last meeting, "from the throne room."

    Again, as he had for weeks, he turned away.
