Summary
It is easily one of the top five most awkward dinners Caleb has ever attended. Everyone realizes very quickly that having the Empire’s Archmage of Civil Influence and the Dynasty’s Shadowhand at the same table means that not overstepping any lines is of crucial importance, and thus the conversation takes a rapid turn for the hilariously banal.
Astrid kills Trent while the Nein are in Aeor. Caleb returns to Rexxentrum to make some peace with his past and make some sense of his future.
There is never a simple way to stop loving someone.

Summary
After their climb up an anti-magic tower and their endless teasing, the wizards decide to take a long rest in the stairwell. Essek endeavours to make this a peaceful night. The issue is that he is in Aeor, trying to trance on a staircase, with Caleb peacefully snoring right by his knee, and he is as hard as his Graviturgy final assignment in year 12 with no relief in sight. Before the night is up, he may or may not succumb to some questionable urges - and a certain companion might be more than amiable where aid is concerned.

Summary
Essek extends a hand towards the base of Caleb’s neck. Then freezes, as if he doesn't quite dare to touch. His fingertips hover over Caleb’s throat, a breath away from the pale streak of a scar, the place where a Sourger’s shiv struck home and sprayed blood over the walls of the Dungeon of Penance.
‘I did this,’ Essek says. His voice is quiet enough to scrape in his throat. ‘I allowed this to happen.’
(In which Caleb and Essek confront demons - in more ways than one - and discuss forgiveness.)
