Summary
1998, Chicago. Thirteen-year-old Claire Laurence just wants to be a writer—but after her latest piece gets brutally torn apart, she's not sure she's cut out for it. Her dad, Laurie, is the only one who still believes in her. But between his draining job at the newspaper and the growing distance that comes with Claire getting older, their bond is starting to fray.
Then Claire writes a novella about a "zombie"—a tired, half-alive man with puppy eyes. She never expected anyone to actually read it. She definitely didn't expect it to become a citywide mystery with everyone desperate to uncover who the zombie really is.
And she really didn't expect her dad to find out—and think it's about him in the worst way possible.
Now Claire has to figure out how to fix what she's broken, before the story she wrote tears her family apart.
