By the time it’s dark, there’s a fire crackling before them. The tent is set up. There are two chairs propped up by the fire. They have cooked and eaten dinner, and they are sitting in silence. It reminds Sirius of the dinners at home after he got sorted into Gryffindor, or after his mother found the letters from his friends, or lately, whenever he dares to show his face around the house at all. What lives in that space isn’t actually silence. Silence is absence. This thing that hangs between him and his mother, now between him and Remus, is the presence of something suffocating and cutting. It doesn’t serve as a placeholder for noise, it serves as a punishment. It cleaves him to the bone, flays him until he wants to cry. The soft, knotting feeling in his chest he feels when he wants to let tears out but can’t is rising in him. Sirius doesn’t know how to kill it except to hiss, “Well if you’re mad at me just fucking say so.”

It’s 1995 and the only flat in London that Remus Lupin can afford is one that’s falling apart and riddled with curses. When the curse-breaker comes in to survey the place, it’s Sirius Black who shows up at his door. On Remus’ doorstep, in 1995, they go through introductions. But they knew each other in 1982, back at university, they knew each other quite well, so why are they pretending they don’t have history?
He’s not quite sure what’s going on between them, what they’re doing, what this tightrope they’re walking is. He’s not sure it’s a good idea.

Sirius coughs out a laugh. Bites his lip and looks out to the water, looks back at Remus. Scrapes his fingernail over the sad sprog of green growing through a seam in the bridge wall. “We’re not?” he asks.
Remus smiles. “No. We’re not.”
“Not even - are you sure?” he asks, his heart beating, beating; it hurts in his chest, a metal door knocker against his ribs. He’s out of breath, he’s running down a highway for this man, he’s scraping his knees on the bitumen.

"La única opción que tienen para pasar la noche es un bed & breakfast en el que la recepcionista asume que son pareja y les da la única habitación que le queda con tanto entusiasmo que no haría falta fijarse en la fotografía que cuelga tras el mostrador y en la que aparece besando a otra mujer en una manifestación llena de banderas multicolor para darse cuenta de que lo mejor que pueden hacer es seguirle la corriente y aceptar lo que les ofrece. Una habitación de una sola cama que a Sirius le parece “fantástica, gracias” y a Remus le tiene sudando antes incluso de verla.
Ni siquiera es una cama particularmente grande".
