Following the mess in Los Angeles, Driver roams for years. Reuniting with an old friend makes him try and get some semblance of a life back, and he lands in San Francisco. He isn't trying to get involved with anything, just keep his head down and be a human so he isn't a dissapointment. It would be easier to keep his head down if he wasn't so compelled by his new neighbor, middle school science teacher Ryland Grace.

Driver couldn't help the way his attention diverted to the struggling parent down the hall. One way or another, his eyes always seemed drawn to that dot of yellow. Maybe it was a reminder of a different time, of the memories with Irene and Benicio that haunted him. Maybe it was the childish dreams for a family. Whatever it was, Driver couldn't help but keep an eye out for them. Was it so wrong to want a family? To have a place to belong to?

“Eeyore isn’t here today.” The waitress said to Ryland instead of greeting, and Ryland looked at her with surprise.
“Who?” He asked dumbly, while moving his laptop to the left.
“The young man with wolf ears.” She said with a shrug, while adjusting his order on the table. Ryland looked at the counter and didn’t find the man in his usual spot.
“Oh.” Ryland answered and frowned a little. “Why Eeyore?”
Meg gave him a stinky eye, as if he'd started this conversation.
“Because his ears are big.” She said and then sighed again more dreamily. “And he looks lonely and sad, especially with those cow eyes.”

Ryland Grace met an interesting stranger at the diner where he became a regular. He saw him so many times that after a while he couldn't help but wonder - who was that man with wolf ears?Series

He finds a temporary fix for the numbness in picking fights, but knows even as he does it that it won't end well. Eventually something will have to give.
And then he gets hit by someone on a bike.
It turns out to be the best thing that's ever happened to him.
