“I think Waylon might be sweet on you,” Joel says teasingly on one of these afternoons, after they’ve parted ways with Waylon to go home.
She’s so surprised that she laughs, thinking it’s a joke.
Then she sees Joel’s smile, confident that he’s hitting a good point for teasing.
“Waylon’s-” She starts before she stops. Waylon’s gay, is what she was going to say, but that’s not her secret to tell. Waylon and Zack aren’t private about it when it’s just them and Dina and Jesse, and she knows their families know, but she hasn’t missed how they don’t usually get too touchy around other people.
For the first time, she consciously thinks about why that might be.
The so am I she could finish the thought with suddenly seems like a very bad idea.

He doesn’t hesitate when he responds, lying through his teeth.
