    Summary

Dean can’t help it. Castiel’s laugh is infectious, washing over him and sweeping him up in its tide. His throat and stomach ache with the feel of it, unfamiliar muscles worked past their endurance. He hasn’t laughed like this in weeks, maybe years.

Cas doesn’t stop laughing, and Dean relishes it. It’s such a good sound, deep and throaty. It rumbles over him the same way that Baby’s engine purrs, to where he can almost feel it in his gut. Dean’s giddy, the kind of happy that hunters don’t get to feel, and if it weren’t for the ceiling, he thinks he might float away. Cas’ eyes crinkle when he laughs, and his smile goes wide and gummy. He’s so brilliant, so alive—

But you’re dead, Dean thinks helplessly. But you’re dead.

    ---

Castiel Novak is one of the best hunters Dean Winchester has ever worked with. He's witty, whip-smart, and has enough knowledge about the supernatural to rival an encyclopedia. He's got humor dry enough to put the Sahara to shame and he's pretty easy on the eyes as well. All in all, he's the best partner Dean could have hoped for.

    Too bad he's dead.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Copy of my review: Oh my goodness, this was wonderful. I loved it so much. I love the premise, and the slow build of suspense and hints before ghostly Cas finally makes himself known. The growth of their relationship was so lovely and sweet, and then the possession! It made sense but oh, that was painful all round.

And then they worked it out, and the sex. Scorching hot and also the perfect dynamic, with subby bottom Dean and dom Cas. The possessed hands scene was incredible. Mmmm.

I had a feeling about Cas' comatose body even before it happened, so good job with the hints! Gabriel was great here, and the fear and tension of the hospital invasion and then the graveyard confrontation was like an episode from the show. Those emotional stakes - fuck. I saw it coming but it still broke my heart.

Amnesiac Cas! 😭 My heart broke for him and, especially, for Dean. And for everyone around them too, but oh, my poor Dean. I'd like to know the immediate fallout of Pam breaking the wall, but I suppose it's less relevant. Same with the Novak family history - for a moment there I was wondering if you were building to some sort of nephilim bloodline or other angelic shenanigans, what with being raised in the life, the angel blade heirloom, and Gabriel's comment about good genes, but I guess it was just coincidental, heh. I did also really like the parallels drawn here between the relationship human Cas and Gabe have and Sam and Dean's relationship.

Also, the way Sam gets to have the life he wants AND a relationship with Dean without the Apocalypse or the forces of Heaven and Hell manipulating them. He gets to make the choice to return to hunting just to be there for Dean, but on his own terms, and then leave. He and Dean get to build a healthier relationship and I'm so happy for them. John was, predictably, an asshole, though I do want to know who told him about Cas. Bobby, as always, is a way better dad.

The boys finally get to touch and to be together! 🥹 I'm smiling stupidly. I stayed up way too late trying to finish this, and then when I was falling asleep I had to set it aside to return to today after some sleep, and it was totally worth it. Absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much. ❤️

    Summary

They're doing that thing again, where Cas is staring at Dean with the intensity of a dog trying to remind his owner that it's past dinner time. Dean's staring right back like the first one to blink is buying the next round. Sam's aware there's a conversation going on that he isn't privy to — and he's used to it, by this point — but it's still rude.

"So, as I was saying," Sam tries to interrupt the resounding silence, "if we can just figure out a — "

"Sure," Dean says, and Sam stutters to a halt, because sure what? "I mean, yeah. Yes. Dude, you don't even have to ask."

    Summary

Lord James Emmanuel Stephen Castiel Scott, second son of a duke, has returned to Britain after years spent in France as a spy in the wars against Napoleon. His childhood friend Lady Celeste Middleton, Marchioness of Bradbury (Charlie to her friends), invites him to a house party in the country so she can play matchmaker: she knows that her friend Sir Dean Winchester is perfect for Castiel. When he declines her invitation, she invents a tale of intrigue with which to entice him. He insists on playing the part of a displaced Frenchman to identify her extortionist. His prime suspect? Sir Dean Winchester, who is clearly a fortune hunter.
Sir Dean Winchester tried to rescue his estate by making his fortune in His Majesty’s Navy, but was cheated out of his rightful prize. Forced to retire when his father died, he needs to marry for money to pay off his father’s debts. When Lady Bradbury invites them to her house party, he hopes to make a match among her wealthy friends. Unfortunately, the only one who catches his eye is the mysterious - and sadly impoverished - émigré Castiel Novacque. As time goes on and they grow closer, Dean begins to wonder if he really is willing to give up the hope of love for the sake of money.

When a second encounter leads to unexpected consequences, there is only one solution: they must pretend to be betrothed in order to avoid scandal, then quietly break the engagement once some new piece of gossip arises.

In the meantime, they’ll have to play the part convincingly enough to fool all of London into believing in their romance. But somewhere along the way, the line between act and actuality becomes blurred, leaving them both wondering if this was the worst idea they’ve ever had-- or the best.
