    It wasn’t so much a pattern as a regular occurrence: the three of them in the staff bathroom, after-hours. It was a dynamic that came naturally: Xiao Xingchen and his smile; Song Lan’s vague disgust; Xue Yang, always leaking. But then Xiao Xingchen had invited him to their home and it suddenly felt very domestic: Xue Yang, being fucked; Xue Yang, mooching off dinner; Xue Yang, crashing overnight on evenings when he didn’t want to go back to his shitty apartment.

    And so Xue Yang should have seen it coming. The dinner invitation. The Michelin starred restaurant. Song Lan, undercut so closely shaved that his scalp looked Saharan. Strong, mumbling Song Lan. Song Lan, asking him what exactly Xiao Xingchen saw in Xue Yang. What exactly.
