Summary
Toni and Shelby have a somewhat complicated relationship. In their freshman year, they had been quite close since Martha was quick to make friends with the girl from out of state. They soon only spoke on occasion and when Martha was around, as Shelby withdrew herself from their lunch table and began having lunch with her new boyfriend: Andrew along with his friends. What made the bond completely snap in half was when Toni got her first girlfriend, Regan at the start of sophomore year. After Toni & Regan broke up, Toni became angrier than ever and didn’t care if she hurt the feelings of the ‘friendly neighbourhood’ Christian girl.
So when they’re forced to work together for a school project, they are forced to put aside their differences, causing a fresh new dynamic between the two to occur, changing their life’s for good.

Later, at the restaurant, they’ll laugh awkwardly about the encounter, sitting in seats that are far too stiff, eating meals that taste amazing but do nothing to distract from the residual tension that remains from the house. They’ll brush it off like it was nothing, but Toni will look into Shelby’s blue, blue eyes and know that both of them are lying.
Later, still, and Toni will pull away from Shelby’s lips in the backseat of her truck, parked in an empty parking lot on the outskirts of town. She will make her excuses as to why she isn’t pushing her gently onto her back, easing her out of her clothes and loving her until she cries out her name. She will speak the lies of ‘being tired’, and ‘not the place’, and she will hate them with all her might. But the truth of the matter is that she cannot get the image of Shelby’s petrified eyes out of her head, and she drives them back in silence, wishing vehemently that she’d just stayed in her fucking car.
