The girl narrows her eyes. “There are no more Fireflies.”
“Yeah, well there might be. In California.”
She smiles wryly. “Might be.”
“It’s the best fucking chance we have, okay? Are you in or not?”
Her shoulders shake as she laughs quietly. “Not. Not with you.” She spits out the last word and her eyebrows are drawn together. So there is still some fight in her.
“Great,” Abby says. “That’s great. Well, we have a boat at the aquarium. I think you know how to find that, right? You’ve been there before?” Abby laces the words with hate.
The girl glares at her.
“We’re leaving first thing tomorrow. Show up or don’t— I really don’t care.” Abby turns to leave. She hears Lev behind her. She doesn’t look back. "---
Or: Dina and Jesse both die in Seattle, and a broken Ellie is reminded that, hell, if she's planning on dying, there's more useful ways to do it. Abby and Lev's journey to the Fireflies, now including Ellie.

Listen. I just really needed a story where Ellie goes to college and she and Joel never had a falling out and no one dies and everyone is mostly happy. So that's what this is. It's Dina/Ellie-centric, but will definitely include family stuff, too. :)

When Joel and Ellie make it to Salt Lake City, they find the Fireflies already dead. With no reason to continue on for a cure, the two head back to Jackson. Ch 1 is a close up of their first twelve hours in Jackson as Ellie struggles to see how she and Joel will make a home for themselves after roughin' it together for so long. Each chapter follows a different aspect of their adjustment, their healing, and the whole journey toward maybe being okay.

Summary
Somewhere along the way, his girl’s gotten to believing that she’s a superhero. He doesn’t disagree, not necessarily, but he still sees the parts of her that are less man of steel and more little girl that grew up lonely and leans in to praise like a plant growing towards the sun. He sees it. Tommy and Maria see it. And evidently, Marshall fucking Green saw it.
Or, everyone has blind spots. Someone tries to exploit one of Ellie’s and its handled accordingly.

She wants to just be a normal kid who tells her parent, guardian—whatever exactly it is that Joel is to her—about crushes and first dates, all of the overly complicated drama that always exists as a byproduct of teenage relationships. She just doesn’t want him to see her differently. Doesn’t want this to be the thing that finally makes him leave.

“Do you want to put away Ellie’s things?" Tommy asks. "We can put them in the attic for now.”
“The hell would we do that for?” Joel lifts up his dead little girl’s shirt, rolls his eyes at the dirt stains that didn’t come out, and folds it neatly.
Tommy swallows. “Cause she died, Joel. And maybe it’s too hard right now to…” he cuts himself off. Joel isn’t listening anymore. He unfolds and refolds the same shirt, his eyes glassy. “Joel—”
“—You got the roster out for next month yet? Was hoping to get Ellie’s birthday week off, I’ve got plans.” He shakes his head. “16, jesus.”
Tommy drops it. Ellie keeps living.
Ellie is presumed dead. Joel doesn't react the way Tommy thought he would.

“You don’t touch her,” Tommy says. “You don’t fuckin’ touch her!”
“Not really in a place to be making demands, old man.” The man's hand leaves Ellie's hair, coming up to her chin instead. He moves the gun from her temple to the back of her head. She resists the urge to bite him, her teeth clenched. “Gotta be from a settlement. No one who’s been out for long is this clean. No girl stays out long either. Always hiding ‘em behind walls. Don’t leave much for the rest of us.”
Joel’s told her about people like this. People who wander around the country alone or in pairs. Usually very young men who don’t fit into even hunter groups for one reason or another.
“Sometimes they’re even worse than the groups," he'd said. "They don’t got anyone holding them back.”
When Ellie and Tommy are attacked, Tommy is forced to put his own potential for brutality on full display. They deal with the aftermath.
