    Summary

Now that Ellie’s alone, she just sits on her bed and looks at her book. She can’t call it reading anymore – by now she has read the thing front to back so many times that she could quote some paragraphs word for word.

That’s why it’s weird that it took her so long to notice the message written on the front page.

There, nestled just below the title, there’s one line of writing addressed to her. It doesn’t mention any names, but it is for her. It can’t be otherwise.
    It’s not Tommy’s handwriting, nor Maria's, nor Riley's.

But it’s somebody’s. Somebody who knew she’d like to read about Moon landing, spaceships, and astronauts. Somebody who cared enough to take this book, fix the hardcover with some scotch tape, and give it to her. Somebody who wrote those words on the front page knowing that they would make her smile.

    Somebody who loved her.

It’s late spring 2024 when Ellie wakes up in Jackson. She has a backpack full of books, a burn on her arm, and no memory of how she went from Boston QZ to Wyoming.

    Summary

It was Joel who stumbled first.

He had felt the strength seeping out of him with every step so viscerally it was like his body was a container with a slow leak. His gate would falter and his hand would slip further down her shoulder, power waning. He would cough in his throat and blink forcefully trying to reignite the spark of energy that had carried him to Ellie just hours ago, but it was all a losing battle. And eventually, he lost it.

It was Ellie who moved first after that.

    Summary

The question of what, exactly, she and Joel are to each other is something that Ellie spends far too long thinking about, and an equal amount of time trying not to think about. The words he’d so clearly communicated last winter, you’re not my daughter, are swimming in her head the whole time she and Joel are hiking back to Jackson after the hospital.

I sure as hell ain’t your dad.

There wasn’t much else to it, was there?

    Summary

Ellie is content like this, Joel busy doing something, and her just sitting with him, watching. It reminds her of after Silver Lake, when Joel would drag her around because she couldn’t stand being without him. She thinks back to the first time she woke up and couldn’t feel Joel’s presence at her back. She had rolled over, expecting to find him sitting across from her, stoking the fire, only to notice that Joel’s sleeping bag was empty, and he was nowhere to be seen. She remembers the fear, that all encompassing fear she’d felt thinking that David had come and snatched him away from her, just like he snatched everything else from her. That fear had been mixed with white hot anger, and she had clung onto her sleeping bag so tight, she’d almost ripped holes in it. She’d cried, hard, and only calmed down once Joel had returned. She remembers the trembling, and the shaking, but mostly the feeling of being held by strong, yet gentle arms. She also remembers when she came to later that night, and apologised to Joel for acting so childish.

“You have nothin’ to apologise for, baby,” he’d said, running his fingers through her hair in a way that always helps her calm down, even now. “You’ve done nothin’ wrong,”.
