Viktor’s face is covered in blood. His chest doesn’t look quite right— it’s concave from broken ribs. Jayce feels for a heartbeat, but his hands are shaking too much to be able to find one.
“Stay with me,” he begs. He picks Viktor up in his arms. Viktor makes a small noise of pain, or perhaps it’s just his mind playing tricks on him, but Jayce doesn’t care which it is. He trips over pieces of the ceiling as he runs with Viktor in his arms.
He and Viktor had counted the number of steps it took to reach the council chambers to the office when they’d been working on the Hexgates. Two thousand, two hundred and sixteen steps has never felt longer.
