Summary
The train is the kind of place where you keep running into the same faces. You become a silent witness to the lives of its passengers, watching them shift and change with time.
Gustave, whose weeks have been dictated by train rides ever since the accident that took his left arm, ends up crossing paths with Verso - this strange man dressed head to toe in black, suddenly part of the scenery of his daily grind.
At first, they only follow each other from a distance… until the day they meet outside the train.
And from then on, they never part again.

Là bas, à l'autre bout du port, la silhouette sombre d'un grand bateau attend, bercée mollement par les vagues. Plongé dans l'ombre, à peine effleuré par le clair de lune, il évoque presque une version miniature du monolithe qui les surplombe depuis l'autre coté de l'horizon. Sciel frissonne en le voyant.
« Je vais avoir besoin de plus de vin... marmonne-t-elle d'un ton sinistre. Lune a saboté tous mes efforts... »
Sophie songe à tout l'alcool qu'elle a déjà avalé et secoue doucement la tête, juste pour elle-même, les yeux fixés sur le bateau, Sciel ne la regarde pas.
« Et si je montais avec toi ? propose-t-elle en lui frottant l'épaule. »
Sciel lui lance un regard surpris.
« Juste maintenant. Pour l’apprivoiser. »Sophie, 32 ans, passe une dernière soirée avec sa meilleure amie qui s'apprête à partir avec l'Expédition, elle ne sait pas encore qu'elle va bientôt se trouver embarquée dans une aventure qui la dépasse.

"We've met," Verso said easily, still watching Gustave with those piercing eyes. "Haven't we, Gustave?"
The use of his full name was deliberate. Not a question, not a tease. A claim. It landed in Gustave’s gut like a stone, heavy and cold, followed by the slow bloom of heat at his throat where the bruises still ached.
He was so, so fucked.
