Summary
In the 21st century a science experiment gone wrong led to an amazingly wonderful thing--Advanced Empathy, the ability to communicate thoughts between humans through simple physical touch. But a few generations down the line the ability has spread to all of humanity, and along with it a curse. Those who touch people they love unconsciously end up stealing away parts of their soul, and if done too much a person can become barely a husk of their previous self. "Love" has become taboo and things like marriage are often handled through arrangement companies between strangers.
Ko's life is ruled by regret. Takakage's life is ruled by order. Marriage is just a way to try and ease some of the tension they feel, that desire for physical connection. Love was never meant to become a factor.

And Eddie — Eddie was safe, Steve thinks, blinking away the sleep from his eyes, groaning slightly as he rolls over to block the sunlight streaming in through the cracks in Eddie’s shitty, half-broken blinds. And then he panics for approximately five seconds when the body his sleep-drunk brain had automatically designated as Eddie lets out a soft, feminine oof, followed by ‘Steve?’
Okay. Definitely not Eddie. And then, then, all the events of the last night play deliciously in his mind before his brain catches up enough to realize Chrissy Cunningham is still curled up in bed between them. And…Steve is pretty sure he just accidentally rolled on top of her. With an apologetic grin, Steve shifts until he’s on his side again.
“Sorry,” Chrissy whispers.
“Did you just apologize to me for nearly squishing you to death? You’re lucky Eddie’s not awake, or you’d be in trouble, babe.”

Summary
“I want to marry you, Eddie,” Steve sighs into his shoulder, tightening the arm around Eddie and bringing him closer. He feels the older man sigh before he brings his hand to cup the back of Steve’s head, leaning in to kiss his forehead.
“You know we can't do that Steve.”
“We’ll wait a few years.”
“Okay, Steve.”
Steve huffs, pushing himself up to lean on his elbow and look at Eddie. The alcohol still prominent in his system is making his head fuzzy, but Eddie not believing him is making him annoyed.
“I want you to take me seriously.”
Eddie smiles at him, his eyes gleaming in that way that makes Steve’s knees weak. It’s not the time for that. “I am taking you seriously.”
“No you’re not!”
“Steve, I want to marry you more than I want anything, but right now it’s just a fantasy.”
“But why can’t you live in the fantasy with me.”
Eddie’s smile softens, pulling Steve in for a kiss, mumbling against his lips, “Okay. I’ll live in it with you.”
Steve smiles, so fucking bright it makes him look like a frog, “So you’ll marry me?”
“Of course I’ll marry you Steve, as soon as this stupid fucking country allows it.”
