    “Aren’t you gonna ask me?” Ava said suddenly, almost startling Beatrice, who furrowed her brow in confusion.

    “Ask you what?”

    “If that’s the only reason I came back,” Ava finished, softly, her voice suddenly vulnerable in a way it hadn’t been since her arrival at Beatrice’s Airbnb.

    “Oh,” Beatrice replied dumbly, her heart skipping a beat before starting to thump furiously. “Isn’t it?” She muttered.

    Ava grabbed her hand atop the table again and shook her head, chuckling softly but incredulously, then smiled warmly at Beatrice, and the only thing the older girl could only read in her eyes was love.

    “No, Bea, it isn’t. I came back for you. I would’ve always come back for you, even if I had to jam another Halo on your back and drag you back to Heaven with me.”
