Spencer Reid knows Derek Morgan.
He knows the simple things. Things like Morgan’s soft spot for dogs, the diameter of his smile, his habit of Golden Girls running in the background after hard cases. He knows what car Morgan drives, that he’s a night owl, his average heart rate (57), each piece of the everyday idiosyncratic array that makes up the man.
Then Spencer knows the deeper things. The things that make up parts of Morgan that he doesn’t want to define him. The things that define him anyway.
Spencer Reid knows Derek Morgan.
Which is why, as Spencer watches darkness encroaching upon the sky from underneath, he cannot understand what he’s done wrong.

Like he knew exactly what Aaron wanted to do to him, could sense the man’s ever-weakening self control. Like Spencer knew how much danger he was in.
He paused, his brow furrowing in confusion that gave Aaron the impression Spencer had somehow never met any of the people he had slept with, “Treat me like what?”

When Reid starts showing symptoms of a fantastical, unknown illness, he tries to figure out what could be wrong with him, turning to medical journals and the internet to no avail. There must be an explanation that doesn't involve his feelings for his boss somewhere, and Reid is determined both to figure it out, and to not let his strange symptoms affect his work— even if it means disobeying a few direct orders in the process.
