When Joyce turned to Hopper to wish him an equally good night, he made the fatal mistake of forgetting that he was surrounded by teenagers, two of whom were Joyce’s kids, one of whom was basically Joyce’s kid but also his, one of whom who seemed to delight at everything, and two of whom were Wheelers and were instantly made uncomfortable at the slightest show of affection. Stupidly (but wholeheartedly), Hopper planted a kiss right on Joyce’s cheek, and she took just a second too long to decide to act surprised by the action.
The stunned silence which filled the air was broken only by the loud slurping sound of Argyle finishing his large Hi-C Orange. He nodded with his whole body, raising the empty cup in Hopper’s direction in what the man could only believe was genuine well-wishing. “Good for you, man.”
“…uh, yeah, thanks…man.”

Then he looks up at her again, with this… look, what is this look? Why does he want her right now? She couldn’t be more of a mess – they’re both exhausted, and gross, and this is not romantic. This is two people who can barely breathe. This is the end of the rope.
“Way,” he huffs through a little sigh, and draws her hand to his lips, “way too pretty for Jesus.”
