At the time, Rumi had scoffed, and dismissed the idea as just a demon's attempt to give himself a justification to be what he was. Demons were evil, pure and simple, with nothing more to it. But now, since the Honmoon was sealed, since all other demons were banished, and since Jinu sacrificed himself, she’s forced to shoulder that there isn’t a single other being left on the planet who understands what it means to feel so deeply that the world frays around you.
But Mira and Zoey are trying. God knows they’re trying.

Water runs as she turns the handle of the faucet, palms cupping together to gather water and splash on her face. Rumi breathes in deeply as she takes a moment to calm down. She’s patting her face dry when she feels it—a weight in her core, something there… between her legs where just a moment ago there was nothing.
“Don’t tell me…” Rumi starts as she stares at her crotch, confusion and a hint of trepidation washing over her as she looks at the seam of her pants like it’s going to sprout a demon mouth and eat her face. Her hand fumbles for her phone, fingers tapping erratically until the calendar app opens up. Her eyes scan the rows of weeks before settling on the notification of their vacation day. Her mouth moves silently, counting the days of the last full moon.
And then Rumi stops, eyes shaking as they hone in on today’s date. The full moon began at midnight.
She squeezes her eyes shut, stifling a groan as she comes to a realization.
Her demon rut has arrived.

Every morning, Mira appeared at 9:15 on the dot, ordered her large iced Americano, and left behind the faint scent of expensive perfume and the lingering possibility of Rumi’s complete and utter destruction.
Rumi had developed a system:
• Don’t say anything stupid.
• If you say something stupid, smile like you meant it.
• Don’t stare at her cheekbones for too long.The system was failing spectacularly on all fronts.
