Summary
This is a re-imagining of some of the events of The Rise of Skywalker because I just cannot live with that ending.
It has been a year since the death of Luke Skywalker, and the galaxy has moved on. Jedi training complete, Rey now sits at the heart of a resurgent Resistance while Kylo Ren’s empire cements its grasp over the territories which have fallen under First Order control. But a new power behind the throne is rising, and it triggers a change of heart which seems far too good to be true…
He made to move around her and she blinked in surprise. ‘Wait – that’s it? You’re going to let me go just like that?’
He didn’t hesitate, stepping across the threshold and starting across the apartment in the direction of the door. ‘Of course. I can’t make you love me if you don’t want to.’
‘But...’ she stammered. ‘Aren’t you even going to try?’
Thumbing the door panel he turned back, just for a moment. ‘I’ve been trying all day,’ he said.

Summary
If anyone notices that Rey and Ben are blushing when they make it to the hallway, they’re all kind enough not to comment. Even Jannah and Rose, when they get into Jannah’s car, don’t mention it, though they exchange a giddy look through the rear-view mirror that Rey pretends not to see. All Jannah says, once they drop Rose off in Tenleytown, is, “Tall.” When she doesn’t say anything else, Rey decides to leave it, letting a wide grin snake its way across her face, hidden in the dark of the car.
The winter that Rey and Ben meet, they fall in love.

“Who are you?” The man carrying the newspaper asked her, scrunching up his brow. He looked her up and down, completely befuddled. One by one, the other man, the doctor, and the stormy woman turned to look at her. They wore almost identical expressions of confusion. Rey blinked, speechlessly. The appropriate answer was "a waitress", or "a stranger," or even "a crazy, perpetually single woman who’s been hopelessly, inexplicably in love with your comatose son for weeks."
Behind her, the nurse huffed, cocking her hip. As if it was obvious, she said, “She’s his fiancée.”
