Summary
College was supposed to be a fresh start. The Party is scattered across nearby campuses, close enough to pretend nothing has changed. Will is finally happy or at least trying to be with his new boyfriend, Carlton. Mike tells himself he doesn’t care. He tells himself a lot of things.
Between shared houses, crowded college parties, and a friend group that never really learned how to separate, they keep falling into familiar patterns: late nights, quiet check-ins, and Mike noticing things he probably shouldn’t anymore. Everything Mike thought he understood about himself starts to unravel. Some realizations come too late. Some feelings refuse to stay buried.
And some feelings don’t fade just because you pretend they have.

“Will's the Sorcerer, right?”
“Uhh, yeah? I mean the character is loosely based-,”
Max burst out laughing, “and you're the Paladin? Oh my God Mike-,”
“The hell is so funny?” Mike snapped.
“You don't even?” Max scoffed. This is why Mike didn't like talking to Max. She spoke as if she knew some joke that flew right over Mike's head, and Mike had a feeling he was the joke.
“Mike. I don't know how to tell you this so I'm just gonna say it,” Max started, “The Paladin is in love with The Sorcerer.”
Mike groaned. They stayed silent for a moment. Max waiting for a reply and Mike cringing at the revelation that maybe this ran deeper than he thought. Maybe the critics weren't wrong. Maybe Heather, along with the rest of his fans, hadn't been crazy after all and hadn't completely misunderstood the text he'd spent seven years writing.
“Why does everyone keep saying that?” He finally grumbled.
Or, In 1996, Mike releases a book inspired by the party and their adventures. A small but loud fandom forms around shipping The Paladin and The Sorcerer. But, that was all wrong. Mike had never been in love with Will, had he?

“So whaddaya say, Michael? Care to make our dear Will the Wise’s dream of getting absolutely shitfaced at a real, honest-to-God party come true?”
Mike looks around at his friends. Dustin’s toothy grin, Lucas and Max’s fond smiles, eyebrows raised expectantly. Finally, into Will’s bright eyes. He’s looking up at him in such a way that Mike knows, deep down, would compel him to do even the worst of things, if he asked. He steals the quickest of glances at those lips, because he just can’t help himself.
Reluctantly, he turns to the group at large. One more eye roll and groan for good luck—“Okay, okay. But Lucas, we’re taking your car.”
Because if Will’s drinking tonight, so is Mike.
