Nico stares at the numbers on his cake, still alight. They’re slowly falling, rainbow patterns melting away.
Tears threatening to build from the pressure in his throat, Nico closes his eyes tight— wish in his mind. He lets himself picture it, just for a moment. Jason, standing next to Percy and Annabeth in the crowd. Scruffy faced and baggy under-eyes from his classes, glasses sitting askew and hair grown out. Finally an adult, just like the rest of them. The way they all deserved to be.
And Nico blows out his candles.

Nico wishes on his 21st birthday that Jason could still be with all of them. With Hades and Apollo attending his birthday party, Nico doesn't think about the potential consequences. The next morning, Jason shows up as a ghost, unable to leave Nico's side.
Who will crack first? Will Jason spill the criteria he has to fill in order to go back to the Underworld? Will Nico beg his father to let Jason go back? Or will Will go crazy from not getting to have sex with his boyfriend and burn their house down? (Will's only kidding. ...Maybe.)
