Catherine—no longer called Kitty—spends her days reading and writing, her presence calm and steady. Mr. Bennet, changed by loss and responsibility, closes his ledger and, drawn by chrysanthemums, steps outside into the chill air to think.

Overall - and chapter one-summary combined...Mr. Bennet receives a letter from a dying relative’s husband, asking him to retrieve and raise their daughter Kirsty—and marry her cousin, Caitlin, who’s acted as her mother. Bennet and Darcy men discuss family history, rooted in Anglo-Scottish tensions. Before leaving for Scotland, Mr. Bennet asks Darcy to keep Elizabeth at Longbourn. Darcy is told - later - of a clan feud of the past, one that has resurfaced. He, like Thomas, chooses silence to protect the family. Ultimately, Caitlin and Longbourn get pulled into it without even trying- all due to a long-lost item believed to be at Longbourn. One of which had removed generations ago. Whether by chance, or by design, is another matter.
