Kenzo was still laughing. He curled in on himself slightly, ears flushed red, and shook his head. “There’s very little blood circulating above my waist right now,” he huffed, looking up at her with an accusatory frown and a lopsided smile that could ruin her outright.
Leah fucking loved this man. “Come here, then,” she said, crooking a finger at him.

“Let me get it this time,” Leah said, reaching for her wallet.
Kenzo made a face as if the notion was too ludicrous to consider. “Absolutely not,” he said, already handing the cash to the waiter. Leah let her wallet drop back to the bottom of her bag. She remained silent until the table had been cleared and the waiter had walked off.
“You can’t always be the one who pays,” she said.
“Why not?”
“Because it’s not fair.”

“Go home,” she said quietly, striking her lighter. “Dinner’s cancelled.”
“Leah—”
“Go,” she cut him off, her voice final.
Tenma let his hands fall, eyes shut against the ache. He wished he could draw her close, hold her until the anger—or pain, or whatever else this was—drained out of her. Wished she would let him in. But he knew she wouldn’t. Not right now.
So he gathered his coat and his keys, and did as she had asked.

When the door clicked shut, Dieter set his bowl down and hurried to the window. Tenma was walking Leah to the car, his hand resting lightly on the small of her back. He opened the passenger door for her and laughed at something she said.
Dieter squinted. “Friend, huh?”
