Their mind raced: Just them and a masked. Their gaze skirted the elevator's perimeter. A few old hooks hung on the wall to their left. A tiny part of the gate behind them frayed and jutted out, threatening tetanus for careless souls. They felt for their light and remembered they threw it.
The elevator jolted. Even the masked flinched. Its head snapped up. The horrid metal box trapping them lurched with a sickening crunch, rattled, and stopped.
A breath. Then another. The elevator’s groaning movement didn’t resume. The employee risked a glance at the solid wall of rock inches beyond the elevator gate, and when they looked away, they met the masked’s empty stare. Its hollow eye sockets terrified them.
