Sometimes, we allow our pre-conceived opinions on a person affect how we treat them, how we react to our interactions with them, how we speak around them. This can be an unconscious instinct— but that doesn’t mean it hurts any less.
Holt reviles this practice with every inch of himself; Gods know he’s borne the weight of this enough.
When Jake flinches briefly before setting his expression back to its normal doe-eyed happiness, Holt is left to wonder at his words around the detective, and question whether his initial assessment of his character was wrong.
When he sees that soft look, he can’t help but feel a pang of something, pushing at his chest like a stone, and finds that he has been unquestionably, wrong.
