Summary
Back then, Zagreb had seemed so vast, like every corner outside of their neighbourhood was another pocket of the world, waiting for Lovro to explore it. Not yet a teenager, Lovro would be allowed to ride the tram unaccompanied for the first time. For a 12 year old, this was the penultimate rite of passage into teenagehood. For once, he would be like the cool, older teens he saw, with their baggy jeans and wired headphones, riding the tram on their own.
That joy that came with the freedom faded quickly upon realising this was yet another burden, and yet another place Lovro would face alone for a very long time. Quickly would Lovro learn that a soft heart led one to a life of misery.

Jakov quiets after a while, words tapering off naturally, he stares up at the ceiling again, then says, casually, “You’re different.”
Lovro’s heart stutters.
Jakov turns his head, looking at him now. “I like that about you,” he adds, softly. Careless-soft. Not meant to mean anything, and not meant to weigh this much. but it ends up meaning everything.

Lovro claps his hands over his ears and squints through the gauzy flat. The sheer curtains are closed against the ambient outdoor night lighting, and the air is weighty with something—smoke and frying oil.
