Summary
“She’s tough”, Sam comments as a version his own eyes flash to peek at him for a split second before disappearing from the room. His own child, weary of him. The child he had no idea existed until 5 minutes ago.
With what feels like more than an island countertop between them, the woman that Sam Wilson has loved for nearly a decade clears her throat, “She’s still a little baby to me, but she’s learning how to be brave. She has to be”
Knowing that’s there’s no acceptable answer Sam still ask- still has to know, “How old is she?”
“She’ll be 7 next Friday”
“Right”, 2 years on the run and 5 years of the blip. His time away made up the entire lifetime of his own child, “I can’t believe this. C-can I meet her? Does she know who I am?”
A grimace and one step away from him proceeds her answer like an omen, “I think right now would be a little too soon. Maybe tomorrow, after Sunday service or Monday?”
“Why not now? It’s been 7 years already that I haven’t been a part of her life. Don’t you think she deserves a dad?”
“…She has a dad Sam. And he’s doing a good job raising her”
Sam Wilson can hardly hear over the sound of his heart breaking, “What are you saying?”
