The night was quiet. The crickets were subdued, and even the crisp breeze that rustled the leaves in the gardens was reverent, as though the peace that settled in this little village was something too precious to mar.
Though they had retired to bed early, his nerves were on fire from lying so close to his beloved. Xie Lian’s breathing had ease into a peaceful pattern, but Hua Cheng hadn’t needed sleep in centuries, and he certainly wasn’t about to waste this night away with it. As the hours crept by he slowly relaxed; alone and under the cloak of the night, he could allow his desperate want to bleed through his carefully crafted skin.
