Even faded, it settled something restless under Taeui’s skin. He hated how much he needed it.

He was supposed to roll his eyes and joke that the crazy snow leopard could stay gone another month for all he cared.
A shadow fell across the narrow space behind the sofa.
Silence.
Then a soft, almost amused exhale.
“Found you.”
Ilay’s voice was low, a little rough from travel, and it slid down Taeui’s spine like cool water.

Angel had sworn for eleven straight minutes. Ivan had gone very quiet. Mark had stared at the signature long enough that Alain, reading over his shoulder on a secure line, asked if he was having a stroke.

No trail. No second chance to catch the bastard smiling.
Ilay, when the report reached him, had only said, “If he bills us again, pay him,” and closed the file. He did not waste curiosity on ghosts. Ghosts did not sit still long enough to be interesting.
