The first day in the basement was largely spent attempting to escape the basement.
As was the second, and the third, and the fourth, and maybe more and maybe less—though it was quite difficult to keep definite track of time when you didn’t have a clock, so Nicky went solely off when he got tired.
Now, he sat at the top step to the basement’s exit, his back pressed against the cold stone wall. The damp had long since made itself at home, seeping through his shirt, creeping into his shorts, settling against his skin like an unwelcome second layer. Every shift sent another chill through him. (And he had to shift—regularly, in fact—unless he wanted pins and needles to set in and make things even worse.)
The silence was deafening.

“Arthur, you’re picking at my fingernails again.”
“I- ah,” He quickly retracted his hand, aimlessly letting it rest by his side, then his pocket, then on the counter he sat at. “Sorry, I didn’t- it’s just- er, I don’t always remember…” He found himself trailing off.
There was silence again. That crushing weight of silence. Nothing. He always thought death would be good, that nothing would be nice, but this nothing was so much, he baffled to imagine it could be nothing at all. And yet, his thoughts were only interwoven with the occasional clink of a cup, and the dim chatter of others in the pub going about their normal lives. He wondered if they were aware of the inevitable end to their peace. Maybe they were. Maybe they just didn’t care.
