In the middle of the night, she weeps into her pillow, in the room with the loud wallpaper and the window overlooking the town that hates her. She’s alone, so alone.
Not alone, though.
She feels its presence in her room one night, tears still stinging in her eyes. She’s too scared to call out to it at first, but there’s something there, standing at the foot of her bed. Watching her with mismatched eyes.
“W-what are you?”
“Your guardian,” the being says.
