Post-ME3, destroy ending. It's Shepard's birthday and Kaidan's present is being kinkier than he looks, as always. And Shepard likes looking anyway. After the well-wishes from friends who were close enough to be family, the presents from people who knew him a little too well, and the cake that reminded them both of the one they had at their wedding, Kaidan sat Shepard on the bed and undressed in front of him. All Shepard had to do was remember how to breathe.

Shepard’s a sole survivor of the massacre on Akuze and the trauma therapy isn’t helping—not as much as it needs to, not with the survivor’s guilt he’s still carrying nine months after the incident. When he meets Kaidan Alenko in Purgatory one lucky night, finding a safe word winds up being about more than enjoying himself with a stranger who really knows how to kiss. For bad or good, one guy could only accomplish so much. At least, that was what the trauma specialist said during their weekly meetings, the first few months after Lieutenant Shepard became John Shepard, sole survivor.

Steve was so happy to have Shepard back, but even he saw that not all of Shepard was really there. Kaidan thought he had repressed his feelings for Shepard (his heart ached when Shepard called him brother), but seeing Cortez and Shepard finally happy together brought back all that anger. Shepard dreamed of losing oxygen and floating away, only to wake to warm arms that aren’t enough to warm his cold soul.

Summary
The evening is late, the lights burned way down low just barely touching on the two forms writhing on the bed. They are so different and yet so alike; one is dark as rich dark chocolate, the other alternating between tan lines and pale skin where trousers and shirt has covered him from the harsh sunlight. They are both bare, and it is obvious at a glance just how well they fit together, like two puzzle pieces slotting together as their bodies join.
