After Lumière was brought back, Gustave and Sophie decided to rekindle their friendship, but without any forced expectation of coming back together. After all, they both changed over the last four years. This is why they decided to meet to just drink coffee together. A normal meeting between friends, absolutely not a date. No date to see here, just good buddies. What do you mean it feels like a date? No, it’s not a... oh, who are they trying to fool? It’s absolutely a date; they just don’t know it yet.

Gustave can see Maelle is getting comfortable with her newfound powers, and can't help but think about the consequences. He still doesn't know the whole truth about the Canvas and the price of its existence. Maelle would prefer it to stay that way at least for a while. She is not ready for another complicated conversation with her brother, as memories of the last one are still fresh, and as painful as in the moment their swords were forced to speak for them.

It's a little difficult, though, when two tsunderes are involved, and one of them doesn't want anything to do with the other at all.
