Summary
In a community as small as Pelican town, gossip spread fast— whether you were interested in hearing about it or not.
It was in this way Shane found out about the new farmer moving into town come springtime, apparently kin to the previous owner. Shane hadn’t officially met the old farmer, not that he remembered, but had heard stories from Gus, who sometimes slipped into the habit of getting chatty after Shane had been at the bar an hour too long.Unlike the rest of the town, though, Shane couldn’t care less about some new person worming their way into Pelican Town. He wasn’t exactly a socialite, and would be surprised to hear if anyone in this town even knew his last name. The only time he ever engaged with the community was during festivals, though it was more due to the urging of his aunt than genuine interest. Still, he stuck to himself, and no one, including him, seemed at all interested in breaking that habit.
He was the town nobody... and maybe found himself believing that was the way he wanted it to be.Bookmarked by TheOverthinker

Summary
He would’ve understood if you wanted a divorce. It would’ve broken him, obviously — losing the first light of his dull, dark life — but it’s something he would’ve been expecting. He accepted a long time ago that pain was just an inevitability, and he almost found himself unnerved in the absence of it that you created. It would’ve made sense, if you wanted a divorce.
But you didn’t ask for one. The morning before you disappeared, you kissed him in the kitchen as usual, and you tended to the crops and animals as usual, and everything was fine, as usual.
The next morning, you were gone.
(Or: you've been gone for five months, nobody knows what happened to you, and Shane isn't really coping.)

Summary
You pause by the doorstep of your home, eyes caught on the small parcel left for you, laid just at the door so you won't miss it. You had already checked the mail in the morning on your way to Pierre’s, and you headed right back home, so the carefully wrapped box is brand new. You walk towards the door, sweeping the little box into your arms as your gut urges you to open it.
It’s early winter. The valley’s vast green land has been sprinkled with bright snow, and although you’re used to annual gift exchanges, the Feast of the Winter Star is far off, and names haven’t been handed out yet.

Summary
“Have you been a good boy?” She teases. Looking him in the eyes and holding it.
“Huh?” Confused now. His face growing weary, a soft blush taking his cheeks at the words. The winter air is doing a good job of hiding it. But his eyes, darting to anywhere but her, gave it all away.
“Have you been a good boy?” She reiterates, making sure to enunciate every word perfectly. Pleased by his unexpected docile reaction, deciding to take it a step further. The original reason she started speaking to him lost to her current whim.
“What do you even mean? I’m not a child.” He scoffs. Taking a small step backward to widen the space between them. His blush is getting darker.
“Just answer the question Shane.”
