Jake cried the first time he held Neteyam. He counted four fingers and thought, with an old human reflex he could not stop: thank God. He looks like her.
When Kiri came, he counted five. The cold touched him — briefly — and then her eyes opened, and it didn't matter.
Then the third came.
Five fingers. Jake's brow. Jake's hands. Jake's face, softened into innocence.

Jake hauled Neteyam up, one arm under his shoulders, one hand slapping hard over the bullet wound. Neteyam gasped, clawing weakly at his vest.
“Dad,” he choked. “Lo’ak -Lo’ak’s still on the ship-”
Jake’s heart had faltered. A violent, sickening misfire.The way of water has no beginning and no end. The sea gives and the sea takes.
