Second chances were tricky. The world didn’t often give them and, on the off chance that it did, there was never anything straightforward about them. There was no glaring sign pointing towards Ochako then as she sat, just as she had all those years before when they were young, on the steps of Heights Alliance that read “don’t fuck it up this time”. There was no sliver of light beaming on her and only her. There was no squeezing or skipping of his heart – they had much too much history between the two of them for that.
There was nothing.
Just her looking at him like she always had. Like she knew he could be better.
But all the same, he knew. He knew that this was his second chance.
And he could be better.
He would be better this time if she’d have him.
And he’d be a fucking fool if he let the one thing that he had ever gotten right in his life go wrong all over again.
