Summary
Beatrice Kusanagi-Young is a full-body cyborg working for the counter-terrorism Section 9. She is exemplary at her job, but as of late especially, she’s been wistful, looking for meaning, and questioning the nature of existence inside a fully cybernetic body.

Officially, you’ll have failed your entry into this department. Unofficially, you will have one job. To infiltrate the underground crime circuit that has pushed this city beyond its limits.”
Beatrice finds it humorous that Chief Reya is talking about this as though she has an option.

Ava’s mouth drops open. “Me? I’d have to move out? No way. I’m basically built into the woodwork at this point.” She jabs a finger at Bea. “You jump, I jump. What’s that one line you like, from Ruby?”
“Ruth,” Bea corrects quietly. “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you,” she quotes. “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay.”
Ava nods with an air of finality. “You’re my forever-roomate, Beatrice. Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay.”
Bea smiles, eyes on the floor for a moment before they meet Ava’s. “Okay. I suppose I can live with that.”

Summary
Miss Silva sighs, dramatic and put-upon. “Alright. I suppose I wouldn’t want you to lose your stripes for the grievous crime of using my name. But if you can’t call me Ava, can you do something else for me?”
Beatrice nods, even though it’s dangerous, even though Miss Silva could ask her for anything.
Perhaps she nods because Miss Silva could ask her for anything.
“Can you think of me as Ava, just in your head?” Miss Silva requests. “Even if you never say it.”
Beatrice considers this. A truly honourable person wouldn’t agree; decorum should govern the thought as well as the action. But Beatrice is already expected to tell Miss Silva no so often that it gets harder every time, and surely this is a small enough concession that no real harm can come of it.

Or, Ava throws everything she has at chipping away Beatrice's propriety, and it only takes several years, a pirate ship, and being absolutely shameless for her to succeed.
