Summary
A lot can happen in a single year. Relationships can fall apart at the seams, along with the people in them. Friends can become lifelines, holding each other up in the sea of emotions that attempt to drown them.
In one year, the illness eating away at Stiles’ mother sent his father spiraling into alcoholism, as he tried to battle his inner darkness with a bottle in each hand. Stiles’ godfathers, Peter and Chris, spent most of their time trying to pull the whiskey from his fingers, but it didn’t change the fact that Stiles was essentially losing both of his parents.
In one year, Derek found company in two girls who irrevocably changed his life. One gave him distressing clarity that caused him to pull away from his anchor, and the other lit his world on fire until there was nothing but ash on his hands.

Talia Hale may not have been the most attentive in all parts of her life, but she was a good alpha. A strong alpha. It was her job to know her pack like the back of her hand, and she did. Or, she thought she did. That was until she noticed just how much Stiles Stilinski knew her pack.
Stiles had managed to wrap nearly every member of her pack around his small, human finger --even Derek, who was practically allergic to conversations and feelings and everything that wasn't hiding in his den with his books. Stiles understood him as if he wore all his thoughts and emotions on his sleeve, which he didn't. Not even with Stiles.
But Stiles knew Derek in a way that Talia didn't even think was possible, because how did the child who hardly stopped to breathe in between words and had no way of sensing Derek's emotions, figure out how to understand him so well through the growls, grunts, and snarls that he tended to communicate with? How did he manage to know him better than her? It made no sense and it was wrong, because she was the alpha.

Peter tried his hardest to remain uninvolved in Christopher's newfound theory of Stiles being Derek's mate, but...well, remaining uninvolved just wasn't his specialty, okay? He found himself watching their interactions under a much closer eye and he quickly saw what had led his husband and their niece to such an extreme theory. What stuck out the most to Peter, though, was that Derek scented Stiles. Constantly. He wasn't quite sure if Derek realized what he was doing--but whether it was purposefully or not, Derek was making sure that every wolf in a ten mile radius was aware that Stiles Stilinski was claimed.
Peter was mildly annoyed that he would indeed have to listen to Christopher tell him "I told you so", once the mate bond between the two turned into a relationship later on...but he supposed he couldn't have hoped for a better way for Stiles to join the pack.

Chris Hale knew that his nephew Derek favored Stiles. The running assumption among the adults was that Stiles was Derek's anchor, which made enough sense as to why he treated him differently than he treated the rest of the pack. But then Chris started noticing that Derek didn't just like having Stiles around, he took care of him. From small things like getting him food when he was hungry, to larger things like taking it upon himself to nurse him back to health when he was sick.
Chris realized that Derek wasn't treating Stiles like an anchor, he was treating him like a mate. And if he was proud of himself for figuring it out before Peter or Talia, well...it wasn't his fault they didn't pay enough attention.
