Summary
Charles thinks, dazedly, through the fog of it all, that the end of it must be a lot like the beginning of it. With Edwin, holding close to him, whispering words that don't quite reach, because he's the best person Charles knows, and he wants to comfort him. So he begs Edwin not to go as the world once again, turns black.
Edwin, of course, stays.
(Charles is familiar with omphalotis nidiformis. He's not familiar with having someone stay with him through the pain of it.)

Because Charles isn’t meant to be loved.
Loved is an unknown feeling. He is meant to love, boundless, energetic, never ending, he is made to love everyone and everything around him without thought, without recourse, without hesitation.
Charles has spent his whole life loving, irrelevant of whether or not there was any response, and he didn’t stop in his afterlife. He follows Edwin like a puppy, all excited chatter and bright eyes and affection.
But Edwin isn’t meant to love him back.
