Summary
“Why are you doing this, Jaylad?” Bruce asks, and Jason’s breath catches in his throat.
(Why? Why does Bruce not stop him now, throw him into Arkham and let the Joker finish him off? Why does Bruce not take Jason into his arms and hold him like night will never break into day and nothing will changed? Why does Jason feel so angry that he takes his knife and carves his name into Gotham, hold its head under water as if to check it will still struggle for life? Why is he still here, haunting Gotham like a restless spirit with unfinished business?)
“Who is man that is not angry?” He finds himself quoting as the Pit demands he take his father’s head as the price of betrayal, that he take his own to satisfy his rage.
Batman stays silent, and Jason sighs. His father has never understood Jason any more than he had understood himself. It’s something they held in common.
“Why is the Joker not dead?” He asks instead, and Batman sighs heavily. This, at least, Batman can understand, or pretend to.

(Sometimes, Jason thinks the greatest tragedy of them all was what he could’ve been.)

Day 12: Shaking
“You're just as stubborn as they say, Hood,” the man praises. Something dark settles in his gut. “It'll make it all that much more fun to break you down, and build you back up. Doesn't that sound fun to you?”

Summary
His dark hair, shorter and straighter than Dick remembered, with a shock of white near his brow that was definitely new. His features, lacking the baby fat and lengthened by age, yet familiar nonetheless. And his eyes… they had changed. They were no longer that beautiful hue of blue, just a few shades lighter than Dick’s own, constantly sparkling with some new scheme. But Dick knew those eyes. He knew them anyway. They were engraved into his memory, from that time a little boy had looked up into his face and said--
I’m Robin, and being Robin gives me magic.
“Jason?” Dick whispered.
~~~
Acting against orders, Dick goes to confront Red Hood by himself. Nothing could have prepared him for who was hiding under that mask.
Summary
Little Wing. It sat on his wrist like a condemnation, the familiar handwriting accusatory in his presence. A reminder of an old crush that somehow never left his system, escaping death's hold even when he hadn't. Jason knew what this was, had been explicitly warned against its magic time and time again, and that just made everything worse. He had a soulmark, and by God it had to be connected to the one person it shouldn't be. What the hell did Dick do this time?
In which soulmates and marks don't exist without magical intervention, and it's just Jason's luck he'd be caught in the crossfire.Bookmarked by TowelOwl
