This was the very first X-Files fanfic I ever wrote. The idea came about as I devoured all of the stories published on the net over ten years ago. As I read them, I couldn’t stop thinking, what if Scully never made it into the FBI? How would our dynamic duo meet? Would they still have that special bond? Would trouble still find them? What about the mysteries and monsters Mulder uncovered? Would the skeptic and believer still end up together?

Set in around 2009, Dr. Dana Scully is working at an institute for medical research in London when an old FBI connection brings a case to her attention. The case has been resolved, but it involved an isolated community on an island called Betazed, the members of which seem to be born with natural telepathic abilities. After years of experience dealing with unexplained phenomena, Dr. Scully is intrigued to have the chance to investigate one not as a crime to solve, but a medical mystery, and she teams up with her colleague, neurologist Dr. Beverly Crusher, to start a research project. Since Dana Scully’s partner Stella Gibson is known to be a workaholic and has recently gained an extra workload due to her promotion to Detective Superintendent, she chose – not completely by her own free will – to take a vacation and tag along to enjoy a beach holiday while Dana and Beverly do some initial field research. Deanna Troi, their contact and translator on the island, turns out to be quite an intriguing and charming woman.
X-Files canon compliant through S1-9 (with spoilers); I choose to ignore IWTB. Pre-canon The Fall. Obviously complete AU for Star Trek TNG.

Painted across the barren and desolate reaches of Texas, the shadows of the Project put additional pressure on Scully and Mulder's already fragile relationship. After a hostage crisis raises more questions about the Project's breeding program, Scully begins her own investigation, leaving Mulder to choose between saving her and saving himself. Finally, the investigation leads to tragedy and Mulder and Scully find that more questions have been asked than answered.
The title reference was to an island mentioned in Medea, to which we turned for fairly obvious reasons.
Take the warning seriously: extreme violence, including the death of children.
