Summary
Season nine can't hurt you here. This is what I would have thought logically followed the events of Existence. This work will likely focus on setting-up how and where my head canon says Mulder and Scully spent the early 2000s. Be patient, there is a case file here after the domestic fluff. This is where my head canon diverges sharply from Chris Carter's universe.

“What is it, Mulder?” she asks, looking at him sideways and seeing how, even in this relaxed environment, his jaw is clenched, his shoulders tight. This tension is nothing new, he’s been that way since they dug him out of the earth, and it’s only when he holds William to his chest or when he falls asleep in her arms that she sees it seep out of him for a bit.
Mulder and Scully have a late night conversation while watching their son sleeping.

Dana had no disagreements with Mrs Mulder on that score, but she rather doubted the long-term effectiveness of the strategy being proposed. Again, she glanced around the room. “But, Mrs Mulder, your son hates me.”

Summary
The Queen is dead. Long live Pale Blue Monica, Student, stardust, om, amen, while Detainee 3487 sits quietly in her mind and replays her memories. She will let go, become one, unravelling under the tutelage of her jailers.
Assistant Director John Doggett has vowed not to return until she is free, and in the meantime he writes down everything he can remember. He does this for them both, so that he never repeats his mistakes, and so that when she is exonerated he can help her remember being Monica Reyes.
That is, of course, assuming she lives.

Literally just yesterday I finished the season 8 angst roundtable discussion, and was like… ho ho ho... Santa XP1 is delivering presents early this year.

I know this has been done before, but can we ever get enough of the "fake" marriage trope? This is my attempt at it!
Great Aunt Olive drops a four-million-dollar matrimonial bomb from the grave, and Scully is entirely prepared to stand on her fiercely independent principles. That is, until her partner points out that sticking it to the patriarchy via a Scottish handfasting loophole is just good financial sense. Strictly for the funding of unauthorized scientific research, obviously.

“Mommy, Mommy!” Emily wails, and Scully looks up from her report. “What are these?”
“Mulder would say they are spirits in the woods.” Scully jokes, which is not well received by her daughter.
“No, he wouldn’t!” Emily creates a cone around her lips with her hands. “Mulder! Look at my drawing.”
“Oh yes, Princess.” Mulder gets up from the couch and moseys over. “Why, that’s us, Scully! It’s Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head!”
