Summary
Mika feels smothered by his family and wants to be left alone. But even the loneliness is suffocating.
The first time they meet, Mika is surprised to find he is uncharacteristically calm around Yuu, when all Mika has ever really felt was seclusion and anxiety around other people. Yuu yearns to be closer to Mika, to discover what a beautiful person Mika was behind his reserved nature, despite Mika's futile efforts to keep him at a safe distance. However, the more Mika gets to know Yuu and the way he's treated at home, he can't help but feel like he has to save him, even if it means letting him all the way in passed the walls he's constructed around himself.
They soon realize their worlds aren't so far apart, and Mika finally starts to feel okay again after nearly a year of his self-induced isolation. Yuu helps him realize his family just wants him to be happy and that his friends never truly left him.
Their relationship takes a sharp turn after Yuu returns to Mika one night bloodied and bruised, and Mika vows to protect Yuu, no matter what.

Mika doesn’t respond. His gaze is fixed several feet below his eye line, staring down the handle of his sword.
On the other end, a child sits alone, abandoned, on the forest floor. She blinks up at Mika with big, brown eyes. If she is afraid, she isn’t showing it. Yuu looks between her and Mika; a staring match that may never reach its conclusion.
Shinoa whistles and puts her hands on her hips.
“Wow,” she says. “JIDA is really recruiting young these days.”

Summary
He was before Yuu now, exactly as Shinoa and the others had described- tall and well-dressed in a peculiar, dark style. Over his shoulder was a black cape that trailed behind him, making him appear even more ghostly than ever.
Half of his face was hidden beneath a beautiful mask; a creamy-white and black one, adorned with delicate wisps of gold. Daintily painted just beneath one eye and above the other were a few measures of musical notes.
Blond hair framed his face, nearly shielding the unmistakable gleam of red in the left eye- the one on the side that was covered by the mask. Yuu’s heart stopped as their gazes met.
The uncovered eye was cerulean. Yuu could recognize that color anywhere, at any time. It couldn’t be- it was simply impossible. There was no way for this to be true, yet there he was, standing before Yuu with a fervent stare swirling darkly with emotions Yuu had never seen in his life.
Yuu felt his throat go dry as he whispered the name of the nearly unrecognizable man before him- the one who was, somehow, once his childhood friend.
“Mika…?”

Mika is a poor university student working at McKruldo’s in order to make end’s meet. He hates his job, but it was the only place that would hire a kid with a temporary address. Yuu on the other hand, has his own apartment that he lives in while attending university, but as a stipulation of getting his own place, his parents require him to work at the fast-food restaurant where his uncle is the Assistant Manager. Working at Hiiragi Fried Chicken is a drag, but Yuu figures that at least it’s better than McKruldo’s across the street.
One day, Mika’s sweeping the parking lot of McK’s in order to get away from the General Manager’s constant sexual harassment, when he sees a black-haired boy cleaning the windows at HFC, their main competitor. Their eyes meet, and….
